Abstract

Low risk herbicides are now commonly used on lawn height turfgrass to manage weeds. This study compared various rates of Fiesta liquid and soluble granular formulations to determine their effectiveness of controlling broadleaf weed populations on lawn-height turfgrass. To analyze control of weed populations, point-quadrat weed counts, NDVI and visual ratings were used throughout the experiment. There were significant reductions in NDVI at ~3 and 5 DAT for most Fiesta treatments, and when compared to the untreated control was consistent with visual weed phytotoxicity observations following both applications. There were some differences in percent reduction of weeds throughout the experiment, but with irrigation to prevent drought stress of the turf and the very hot conditions we experienced here in Guelph this summer, regrowth of weeds, especially clover seemed to be very high.
