Background: During adolescence, physical activity levels and academic performance decrease and dropout rates increase. In view of these problems, a concept called “physically active learning” (PAL) appears with the intention of increasing physical activity levels and academic performance simultaneously. Objective: To identify previously published literature, referring specifically to secondary school, and, based on the same, to try to find out what effects PAL achieves on academic performance at this stage. Method: The search was carried out during the first week of February 2024 in Pubmed, ScienceDirect and Scopus. The following terms “Physically active learning” were used. Inclusion criteria were: articles that implemented PAL in high school students and that measured academic performance variables. mathematical and reading competence, and the other one only mathematical competence. Different intervention strategies were used and compared with a control group. In all the intervention groups, mathematical competence and reading competence increased. Discussion: There seems to be a coinciding trend in that PAL increases mathematical and reading competence. However, aerobic capacity does not increase in all intervention groups, so this improvement could vary according to the type of intervention. Conclusion: Physically active methodologies, such as PAL, could be effective in improving academic performance compared to traditional methodology in high school students.
