In this study, cooling of small form factor computer is numerically investigated. The numerical model is analyzed using a commercial computational fluid dynamics software Icepak™ . The effects of grid selection, discretization schemes and turbulence models are discussed and presented. In addition, physical phenomena like recirculation and relaminarization are addressed briefly. For a comparison with the computational fluid dynamics results, an experiment is conducted and some temperature measurements are obtained from critical locations inside the chassis. The computational results were found to be in good agreement with the experimental ones.

In this study, forced convection cooling of package of 2-D parallel boards with heat generating chips is investigated. The main objective of this study is to determine the optimal board-to-board spacing to maintain the temperature of the components below the allowable temperature limit and maximize the rate of heat transfer from parallel heat generating boards cooled by forced convection under constant pressure drop across the package. Numerical Investigation on Cooling of Small form Factor Computer Cases
ORHAN, OMER EMRE; Tarı, İlker (2008-11-01)
In this study, cooling of small form factor computers is numerically investigated. The problem is a conjugate heat transfer problem in which ambient air is the final heat transfer medium. In modeling the problem, heat transfer using heat pipes running from the CPU to the heat exchanger in the back end of the chassis, forced convection inside the chassis, ventilation of the chassis air, conduction paths inside the chassis, and natural convection from the chassis walls to the ambient air are considered. The n...
Numerical simulation and analytical optimization of microchannel heat sinks
Türkakar, Göker; Okutucu Özyurt, Hanife Tuba; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2010)
This study has two main objectives: The performance evaluation of existing microchannel heat sinks using a CFD model, and the dimensional optimization of various heat sinks by minimizing the total thermal resistance. For the analyses, the geometric modeling is performed using the software GAMBIT while the thermal analysis is performed with FLUENT. The developed model compares very well with those available in the literature. Eight different metal-polymer microchannel heat sinks are analyzed using the model ...

In this study, the thermal management system of a notebook computer is investigated by using a commercial finite volume Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. After taking the computer apart, all dimensions are measured and all major components are modeled as accurately as possible. Heat dissipation values and necessary characteristics of the components are obtained from the manufacturer's specifications. The different heat dissipation paths that are utilized in the design are investigated. Two active...

Bakır, Öztekin; Yamalı, Cemil; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2006)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of a spherical solar collector by using numerical and experimental methods. For this analysis, equations were obtained by choosing appropriate control volumes in the system and applying The First Law of Thermodynamics. The experiments were realized at four different mass flow rates and non-flow situation. For the numerical simulation of the system, a computer program in Mathcad was written. Another computer program in Mathcad was written for the va...
