Kaluza-Klein theories generally in $(4+D)$ and more specifically in five dimensions are reviewed. The magnetic monopole solutions found in the Kaluza-Klein theories are generally reviewed and their generalizations to Anti-de Sitter spacetimes are discussed.

Effective gauge theories from fuzzy extra dimensions
Ünal, Gönül; Kürkcüoğlu, Seçkin; Department of Physics (2016)
In this thesis, we investigate the formulation and various aspects of gauge theories with fuzzy extra dimensions. In SU (N ) gauge theories coupled to a suitable number of adjoint scalar fields, we determine a family of fuzzy vacuum configurations dynamically emerging after the spontaneously symmetry breaking of the gauge symmetry. The emergent models are conjectured to be effective U (n) (n < N ) gauge theories with fuzzy extra dimensions. Making use of the equivariant parametrization technique and focusin...
Conformal symmetry in field theory
Huyal, Ulaş; Tekin, Bayram; Department of Physics (2011)
In this thesis, conformal transformations in d and two dimensions and the results of conformal symmetry in classical and quantum field theories are reviewed. After investigating the conformal group and its algebra, various aspects of conformal invariance in field theories, like conserved charges, correlation functions and the Ward identities are discussed. The central charge and the Virasoro algebra are briefly touched upon.
Compatibility of the dimensional reduction and variation procedures for a quadratic curvature model with a Kaluza-Klein ansatz
Çelik, Sinan; Baykal, Zübeyde Sibel; Department of Physics (2021-9-02)
The Kaluza-Klein theory is investigated for a 5D quadratic curvature Lagrangian. In order to obtain the field equations in the actual 4D spacetime, there are two different approaches composed of two successive applications to be implemented to the 5D action. Either one applies the least action principle with respect to the 5D variables and then uses the dimensional reduction mechanism, or changes the order by first reducing the action and then takes the variations with respect to the constituent fields of t...
Algebraic geometric methods in studying splines
Sipahi Ös, Neslihan; Bhupal, Mohan Lal; Altınok Bhupal, Selma; Department of Mathematics (2013)
In this thesis, our main objects of interest are piecewise polynomial functions (splines). For a polyhedral complex $\Delta$ in $\mathbb{\R}^n$, $C^{r}(\Delta)$ denotes the set of piecewise polynomial functions defined on $\Delta$. Determining the dimension of the space of splines with polynomials having degree at most $k$, denoted by $C^r_k(\Delta)$, is an important problem, which has many applications. In this thesis, we first give an exposition on splines and introduce different algebraic geometric metho...
A dynamic theory for laminated composites consisting of anisotropic layers
Yalçın, Ömer Fatih; Turhan, Doğan; Department of Engineering Sciences (2006)
In this thesis, first a higher order dynamic theory for anisotropic thermoelastic plates is developed. Then, based on this plate theory, two dynamic models, discrete and continuum models (DM and CM), are proposed for layered composites consisting of anisotropic thermoelastic layers. Of the two models, CM is more important, which is established in the study of periodic layered composites using smoothing operations. CM has the properties: it contains inherently the interface and Floquet conditions and facilit...
