The purposes of this study were to investigate sixth grade students’ understanding of multiplication of fractions in terms of the Pirie–Kieren Model of Understanding in the light of use of multiple representations and to improve mapping feature of the current theory to increase depicting power of the maps produced. One of the qualitative research methods, case study design was used. This study was conducted with two sixth grade students at a public school in Etimesgut, Ankara in the spring semester of 2009-2010. Students learnt fractions. They completed activity sheets during the lessons. They completed self-evaluation forms and wrote journals just after the instruction. After that semi- structured interviews were conducted with two students in order to analyze their understanding about multiplication of fractions. The data collected from interviews were used to reveal understanding maps of each student. Moreover, the data from activity sheets, student journals, observations, and self-evaluation forms were used to strengthen the findings from the interviews. This study showed that there was a relationship between students’ preference on the use of different type of representations and attained understanding level of multiplication of fractions. It was also found that establishing connection between multiplication of fraction concept and real life usage of these concepts and extending whole number multiplication to the multiplication with the fractions were acted as an obstacle for understanding the multiplication of fractions. In the current study, it was seen that there was a relationship between question type and students use of representations. Moreover, teachers should use different type of representations in their classrooms more frequently in order to help students to reach higher level of understandings. Teachers should also connect new ideas to what the students have already learned for deeper understanding of them.

A Study on fifth grade students' mistakes, difficulties and misconceptions regarding basic fractional concepts and operations
Tarkan Yuırtsever, Nilgün; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2012)
The purpose of this study was to investigate mistakes made by elementary fifth grade students regarding basic fractional concepts and operations, and difficulties that they encounter. The other purpose was to investigate underlying misconceptions and reasons of those difficulties and mistakes. For this purpose, a mixed-method research combining quantitative and qualitative approach respectively was performed. Data were collected from elementary fifth grade students at the end of the spring semester of 2009-...
An investigation of mathematics achievement of eighth grade students with respect to their learning styles
Kurbal, Serkan Süleyman; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç; Department of Educational Sciences (2011)
This study aimed to investigate the differences in mathematics achievement scores of the eighth grade students with respect to their learning styles. Mathematics achievements of the eighth grade students were determined by the number of correct answers given in the mathematics subtest of Level Determination Examination (abbreviated in Turkish as SBS) which was administered in June 2009. Mathematics achievements of the eighth grade students were also determined by teacher-assigned mathematics grades which we...
A case study of the use of manipulatives in upper elementary mathematics classes in a private school: teachers‟ and students‟ views
Yıldız Tuncay, Banu; Bulut, Safure; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2012)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the views of upper elementary mathematics teachers and students about the use of manipulatives in teaching and learning mathematics. This study is a qualitative case study. The participants of this study were four elementary mathematics teachers in a private school and their 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. The data were collected through one-to-one interviews, observations and analyzing documents consisting of annual plan, daily plan, notebooks of students, and...
A case study on the aspects of classroom discourse in a fifth grade mathematics class in a regional elementary boarding school
Şahin, Şule; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2009)
The purpose of this study was to analyze and interpret specific aspects and characteristics of classroom discourse of an elementary mathematics classroom. To examine the classroom discourse, a fifth grade mathematics classroom was observed during sixteen weeks, and twenty lessons in total. The analysis was based on two main categories: (1) Student Learning and (2) Teacher Moves. Student Learning further divided into two sub-categories as content and learning. Additionally, Teacher Moves also divided into co...
The nature of prospective mathematics teachers' pedagogical content knowledge: the case of multiplication of fractions
Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2011-06-01)
The purpose of this study was to investigate prospective mathematics teachers' knowledge of common conceptions and misconceptions that sixth and seventh grade students had about multiplication of fractions. In addition, prospective teachers' knowledge of the sources of these misconceptions and strategies they knew to overcome these misconceptions was examined. Data were collected from 17 Turkish prospective teachers at the end of the spring semester of the 2004-2005 academic year. A case study design was us...
