In Turkey, due to lack of on-site wave measurement data, design of coastal structures primary relies on wind measurements. Meteorology and ECMWF are the most commonly used data sources for the data sets, which provide valuable information about wind and wave characteristics. In the scope of this research, these two data sets are chosen to be analysed and compared according to their extreme and long term wave characteristics, in order to see different data sets impact on design process. In this study, seven meteorology stations and their nearby coordinates along Mediterranean coast in Turkey are chosen as inspected regions. After both data sets are acquired from respective sources, these data are processed and formatted to make them ready to be used specifically for wind.exe and W61 programs, which are used for data analysis part of this research. For each selected location, scatter graphs wind roses, extreme and long term analysis are made for both graphical visualization and numerical calculations. Moreover, importance of selected ECWMF coordinates and change of design wave height related to the coordinate is also investigated. The results of research is presented and also outcomes are compared with previous studies to provide a comprehensive point of view in the research topic. In addition to analysis part of study, a further online research of historical storm occasions around Mediterranean coast of Turkey is conducted, found events and their characteristics are presented and compared with available data sets.

Comparison of wind and wave sources for turkish coasts
Esen, Mustafa; Ergin, Ayşen; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
Hourly wind measurements are the most important and commonly used data to estimate wave climate for Turkish coasts. There are several data sources, available for coastal engineers in Turkey, among which hourly wind measurements of Turkish coastal meteorological stations (TCMSs) are the most easily obtained and used data. However, due to several features and factors, the overall performance of TCMSs’ representability for onshore winds is low. Therefore, a need arises to search and use alternative wind data s...
Comparison of the rural atmosphere aerosol compositions at different parts of Turkey
Doğan, Güray; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal; Department of Environmental Engineering (2005)
Long term data generated at four rural stations are compared to determine similarities and differences in aerosol compositions and factors contributing to observed differences at different regions in Turkey. The stations used in this study are located at Mediterranean coast (20 km to the west of Antalya city), Black Sea coast (20 km to the east of Amasra town), Central Anatolia (Çubuk, Ankara) and Northeastern part of the Anatolian Plateau (at Mt. Uludag). Data used in comparisons were generated in previous...
Analyses of atmospheric and marine observations along the Turkish coast
Tutsak, Ersin; Özsoy, Emin; Department of Physical Oceanography (2012)
Time series and spectral analyses are applied to meteorological data (wind velocity, air temperature, barometric pressure) and sea level measurements from a total of 13 monitoring stations along the Turkish Coast. Analyses of four-year time series identify main time scales of transport and motion while establishing seasonal characteristics, i.e. distinguishing, for instance, between winter storms and summer sea-breeze system. Marine flow data acquired by acoustic doppler current pro filers (ADCP) is also a...
Evaluation of extreme wave statistics by using two wind data sets for Western Black Sea Region in Turkey /
Erol, Cevdet Onur; Özyurt Tarakcıoğlu, Gülizar; Ergin, Ayşen; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
Design of coastal structures in Turkey depends on wind measurements since on-site wave measurements either do not exist or very limited. Two of the most commonly used wind data sets, meteorology and ECMWF, are decided to be compared and analyzed in terms of extreme wave characteristics to see their effects on design process when different data sets are utilized. For this purpose, seven points are selected along western coast of Black Sea in Turkey and both data sets are acquired from their respective source...
Theoretical study of solar ponds for space heating in diverse climatic conditions of Turkey
Taşdemiroğlu, Erol (Elsevier BV, 1988-11)
The thermal performance of a solar pond operating under steady-state conditions is analysed theoretically for use in space heating in four diverse Turkish locations having widely different climates. The average pond temperature for each month is obtained for maximum heat extraction, with the thickness of the pond-insulating layers as a fixed parameter. For a fixed pond-insulating layer, the useful heat withdrawn during the month is calculated for these four locations. Space-heating loads and the solar heati...
