Photofermentation is one alternative to produce hydrogen sustainably. The photobioreactor design is of crucial importance for an economically feasible operation, and an optimal design should provide uniform velocity and light distribution, low pressure drop, low gas permeability and efficient gas-liquid separation. A glass, stacked tubular bioreactor aimed at satisfying these criteria has been designed for outdoor photofermentative hydrogen production by purple non sulfur bacteria. The design consists of 4 stacked U-tubes (tube diameter 3 cm) and 2 vertical manifolds. The hydrodynamics of the 3-dimensional model of this reactor was solved via COMSOL Multiphysics 4.1. The effects of tube length (1.4, 2.0, 3.8 m), tube pitch (8, 10.5, 13 cm) and volumetric flow rate (25-250 L/h) on the flow distribution were investigated. The glass stacked tubular reactor design results in less ground area and longer life time. This design has been constructed and operated with using Rhodobacter capsulatus YO3 hup(-) and molasses as the carbon source under outdoor conditions. (C) 2016 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Temperature resistant mutants of Rhodobacter capsulatus generated by a directed evolution approach and effects of temperature resistance on hydrogen production
Gokce, Abdulmecit; Ozturk, Yavuz; Çakar, Zeynep Petek; Yucel, Meral (Elsevier BV, 2012-11-01)
Hydrogen (H-2) is a promising alternative energy carrier which can be produced biologically. Rhodobacter capsulatus, a non-sulfur purple photosynthetic bacterium, can produce H-2 under nitrogen-limited, photoheterotrophic conditions by using reduced carbon sources such as simple organic acids. Outdoor closed photobioreactors; used for biological H-2 production are located under direct sunlight, as a result; bioreactors are exposed to temperature fluctuations during day time. In this study to overcome this p...
Development of non-noble Co–N–C electrocatalyst for high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells
Eren, Enis Oğuzhan; Özkan, Necati; Devrim, Yılser (Elsevier BV, 2020-11-27)
© 2020 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLCThe development of a non-noble Co–N/MWCNT (MWCNT = multi-walled carbon nanotubes) electrocatalyst is achieved through the high-temperature pyrolysis method and successfully characterized by five-step physico-chemical analysis. By utilizing high-resolution analytical surface characterization methods, the chemical states of elements are determined, and the presence of Co-Nx sites is confirmed. ORR activity of a Co–N/MWCNT is found to be auspicious. The maximum number of ...
Hyperthermophilic hydrogen production from wastewater biosolids by Caldicellulosiruptor bescii
Yılmazel Tokel, Yasemin Dilşad; Duran, Metin (Elsevier BV, 2015-09-28)
Wastewater biosolids are abundant renewable resources that are rich in organic matter and offer a low cost potential feedstock for biohydrogen production. Relevant literature indicates that biosolids conversion rates are relatively low and therefore this option is not considered feasible. This study showed that hyperthermophilic bacteria Caldicellulosiruptor bescii could efficiently utilize biosolids as the sole carbon source and produce hydrogen (H-2) for the first time in the literature. Degradability ass...
CaXH3 (X = Mn, Fe, Co) perovskite-type hydrides for hydrogen storage applications
SÜRÜCÜ, GÖKHAN; Gencer, Ayşenur; Candan, Abdullah; Güllü, Hasan Hüseyin; IŞIK, MEHMET (Wiley, 2019-12-12)
Hydrogen storage is one of the attractive research interests in recent years due to the advantages of hydrogen to be used as energy source. The studies on hydrogen storage applications focus mainly on investigation of hydrogen storage capabilities of newly introduced compounds. The present paper aims at characterization of CaXH3 (X: Mn, Fe, or Co) perovskite-type hydrides for the first time to understand their potential contribution to the hydrogen storage applications. CaXH3 compounds have been investigate...
Pilot-scale outdoor photofermentative hydrogen production from molasses using pH control
Oflaz, F. Betül; Koku, Harun (Elsevier BV, 2020-01-01)
© 2020 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLCThe duration of photofermentative hydrogen production from sugar-based nutrients is limited by gradual acidification caused by the production of organic acids, leading to suboptimal pH. To address this issue, a custom pH control system was built and installed on a 20 L tubular photobioreactor, and operated under outdoor conditions. Long-term, single-stage hydrogen production from molasses was achieved using the purple non-sulfur bacterium, Rhodobacter capsulatus. The r...
