The historical record of tsunamis observed on the coasts of Sakhalin Island located in the Sea of Okhotsk is given. Totally, 30 events have occurred during the whole history of observation. Historical data clearly show that the Kuril Isles protect the Okhotsk Sea from the tsunami waves that originated in the Pacific. The historical tsunamis that penetrated in the Okhotsk Sea are less intense than the tsunamis on the Pacific coast of the Kuril Isles. The numerical simulation of the 1963 Urup tsunami generated by the strong earthquake on the Kuril Isles is performed. It allows plotting the spatial distribution of tsunami wave heights along the Sakhalin coast and comparing the obtained results with observation.

Basement structure and architecture of the Black Sea Basin
Kaymakcı, Nuretdin; Horn, Brian (null; 2018-01-28)
Black Sea consists of two separate back arc basins which opened at different times during the Cretaceous in response to northward subduction of the Neo-Tethys Ocean. The paucity of well data, complex geometries and seismic imaging challenges mean that questions remain regarding the basement architecture though most authors accept that, at least in part, both these basins are floored by oceanic crust, even though there are no magnetic stripes. Interpretation of deep, long offset seismic data (imaging to more...
Earthquake focal mechanism and stress tensor analysis along the central segment of the North Anatolian fault
Karasözen, Ezgi; Özacar, Atilla Arda; Kaymakcı, Nuretdin; Department of Geological Engineering (2010)
The North Anatolian Fault (NAF) is one of the world’s largest active continental strikeslip faults, and forms the northern margin of the Anatolian plate. Although its geologic and geomorphologic features are well defined, crustal deformation and associated seismicity around central segment of the NAF is relatively less-known. In this study, we analyzed locations and focal mechanisms of 172 events with magnitude ≥ 3, which are recorded by 39 broadband seismic stations deployed by the North Anatolian Passive ...
Tsunamis in the Sea of Marmara - Historical documents for the past, models for the future
Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Altinok, Y; Ozbay, I; Imamura, F (Elsevier BV, 2002-10-15)
More than 30 tsunami events have impacted the coasts of the Sea of Marmara in the past two millennium, clustering in Izmit Bay, the shores of istanbul, Gemlik Bay, the shores of the Kapidak and Gelibolu Peninsulas. With respect to the last well-known tsunami, the Izmit tsunami of 17 August, 1999, available field survey run-up data and marine surveys provide an opportunity to evaluate how these events were triggered. The main purpose of this study is to determine the slope failure potential as a possible tsu...
Sedimentary geochemical evidence of historical tsunamis in the Eastern Mediterranean from oludeniz Lagoon, SW Turkey
Avşar, Ulaş (2019-03-01)
In the Eastern Mediterranean and southern Aegean seas, historical records indicate there were 17 tsunamis in the last 2500years with intensities>6 on a 12-point tsunami intensity scale. Regional geologic records of past tsunamis, however, are not sufficiently well-documented to assess tsunami hazards. This study presents geochemical evidence of historic tsunamis in the Eastern Mediterranean for the last 700years, detected in the sedimentary sequence of oludeniz Lagoon, SW Turkey. Sediment chronology was est...
Seismically-triggered organic-rich layers in recent sediments from Gollukoy Lake (North Anatolian Fault, Turkey)
Avşar, Ulaş; De Batist, Marc; Lepoint, Gilles; Schmidt, Sabine; Fagel, Nathalie (2014-11-01)
Multi-proxy analyses on the sedimentary sequence of Gollukoy Lake, which is located on the eastern North Anatolian Fault (NAF), reveals a complete and high-resolution paleoseismic record for the last 650 years. Six sedimentary events are detected in a 3.1 m-long piston core. They form distinct organic-rich intercalations within the background sedimentation, which are characterized by strong anomalies on the loss-on-ignition (LOI550) and total organic carbon (TOC) profiles, as well as by lighter colours on t...
