Fabrication of silicon nanowires by electroless etching and investigation of their photovoltaic applications
Özdemir, Barış; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Turan, Raşit; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2011)
Silicon is the most important semiconducting material for optoelectronics owing to its suitable and tunable physical properties. Even though there are several alternatives, silicon based solar cells are still the most widely produced and commercially feasible system. Extensive efforts have been spent in order to increase the efficiency and decrease the cost of these systems. The studies that do not focus on replacement of the semiconducting material, mostly concentrate on the developments that could be brou...
Silicon nanostructures for electro-optical and photovoltaic applications
Kulakcı, Mustafa; Turan, Raşit; Department of Physics (2012)
Recently extensive efforts have been spent in order to achieve all silicon based photonic devices exploiting the efficient light emission from nanostructured silicon systems. In this thesis, silicon based nanostructures have been investigated for electro-optical and photovoltaic applications. The thesis focused on three application areas of silicon nanostructures: Light emitting diode (LED), light modulation using quantum confined Stark effect (QCSE) and photovoltaic applications. In the context of LED appl...
Silicon nanowires for network photodetectors and plasmonic applications
Mülazımoğlu, Emre; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Turan, Raşit; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2013)
Being the key component of the semiconductor industry, silicon in nanowire form has gained increased attention. In this thesis, vertical arrays of silicon nanowires (Si NWs) have been fabricated with metal assisted etching method (MAE). MAE method is a simple, solution based and low temperature process. In this method, fabricated nanowires inherit the starting wafer characteristics, such as doping type, density and crystal orientation. In the first part, fabricated NWs in network form have been demonstrated...
Performance assesment of indium antimonide photodetectors on silicon substrates
Tümkaya, Ümid; Günal, İbrahim; Beşikçi, Cengiz; Department of Physics (2003)
In this study, detailed characteristics and performance assessment of 3-5 æm p-i-n InSb photodetectors on Si substrates are reported. The detector epilayers were grown on GaAs coated Si substrates by molecular beam apitaxy (MBE). Both homojunction and single heterojunction (AlInSb/InSb) detector structures were investigated. Arrays of 33x33 æm2 detectors were fabricated and flip-chip bonded to a test substrate for detailed electrical and optical characterization. A peak detectivity as high as 1x1010 cmHz1/2...
Reduction of silicon dioxide by electrochemical deoxidation
Ergül, Emre; Karakaya, İshak; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2010)
Electrochemical reductions of porous SiO2 pellets and bulk SiO2 plate were investigated in molten CaCl2 and/or CaCl2-NaCl salt mixture. The study focused on effects of temperature, particle size of the starting material, electrolyte composition and cathode design on the reduction rate. The behavior of the cathode contacting materials was also examined. Moreover, cyclic voltammetry study was conducted to investigate the mechanism of the electrochemical reaction. Mainly, XRD analysis and SEM examinations were...
