Numerical modeling of grounwater flow behavior in response to beach dewatering
Goler, Güneş; Önder, Halil; Department of Civil Engineering (2004)
In this study, The Beach Dewatering System, a relatively recent technology to combat beach erosion, which is proposed as a practical alternative to more traditional shoreline stabilization methods, is investigated and an informative overview on the genesis, development and recent use of this technique is provided. On the basis of the link existing between the elevation of beach groundwater and erosional or accretionary trends at the beach face, a numerical model that simulates groundwater flow in a coastal ...

Numerical simulation of wave-induced scour and backfilling processes beneath submarine pipelines
Fuhrman, David R; Baykal, Cüneyt; Sumer, B Mutlu; Jacobsen, Niels G; Fredsoe, Jorgen (2014-12-01)
A fully-coupled hydrodynamic/morphodynamic numerical model is presented and utilized for the simulation of wave-induced scour and backfilling processes beneath submarine pipelines. The model is based on solutions to Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, coupled with k - omega turbulence closure, with additional bed and suspended load descriptions forming the basis for sea bed morphology. The morphological evolution is updated continuously, rather than being based e.g. on period- or other time-averaging...
Numerical Modeling of Rupture in Human Arterial Walls
Gültekin, Osman; Dal, Hüsnü; Holzapfel, Gerhard A. (null; 2018-07-12)
AbstractIntroductionThe initiation and propagation of fractured surfaces associated with the aortic dissection, atherosclerosis and aneurysms are invariably contingent upon the local stress and strain states in the artery wall during supra-physiological loading cycles [1, 2]. This proves computational mechanics quite useful to improve and even guide medical monitoring and preoperative planning.MethodsThe present study is developed on the basis of the variational principle featuring a thermodynamically consi...
