This study aims at providing a control-learning framework capable of generating optimal locomotion patterns for the modular robots. The key ideas are firstly to provide a generic control structure that can be well-adapted for the different morphologies and secondly to exploit and coevolve both morphology and control aspects. A generic framework combining robot morphology, control and environment and on the top of them optimization and evolutionary algorithms are presented. The details of the components and some of the preliminary results are discussed. (C) Selection and peer-review under responsibility of FET11 conference organizers and published by Elsevier B.V.

Trajectory tracking control of robots with flexible links
Ider, SK; Özgören, Mustafa Kemal; Ay, V (2002-11-01)
A new method is developed for the end-effector trajectory tracking control of robots with flexible links. In order to cope with the non-minimum phase property of the system, the closed-loop poles are placed at desired locations using full state feedback. The dynamic equations are linearized about the rigid motion. A composite control law is designed to track the desired trajectory while at the same time the internal dynamics is stabilized. The proposed method is valid for all types of manipulators with any ...
Acoustic surface perception through the ground interaction of compliant legs of a hexapod robot
Cüneyitoğlu Özkul, Mine; Yazıcıoğlu, Yiğit; Saranlı, Afşar; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2012)
A dynamically dexterous legged robot platform generates specific acoustic signals during the interaction with the ground and the environment. These acoustic signals are expected to contain rich information that is related to the interaction surface as a function of the position of the legs and the overall contact process mixed with the actuator sounds that initiate the movement. As the robot platform walks or runs in any environment, this convolved acoustic signal created can be processed and analyzed in re...
Polymorphic robotic system controlled by an observing camera
KOCER, Bilge; YUKSEL, Tugce; YUMER, M. Ersin; Ozen, C. Alper; Yaman, Ulaş (2010-02-28)
Polymorphic robotic systems, which are composed of many modular robots that act in coordination to achieve a goal defined on the system level, have been drawing attention of industrial and research communities since they bring additional flexibility in many applications. This paper introduces a new polymorphic robotic system, in which the detection and control of the modules are attained by a stationary observing camera. The modules do not have any sensory equipment for positioning or detecting each other. ...
Perpetual Robot Swarm: Long-Term Autonomy of Mobile Robots Using On-the-fly Inductive Charging
Arvin, Farshad; Watson, Simon; Turgut, Ali Emre; Espinosa, Jose; Krajnik, Tomas; Lennox, Barry (2018-12-01)
Swarm robotics studies the intelligent collective behaviour emerging from long-term interactions of large number of simple robots. However, maintaining a large number of robots operational for long time periods requires significant battery capacity, which is an issue for small robots. Therefore, re-charging systems such as automated battery-swapping stations have been implemented. These systems require that the robots interrupt, albeit shortly, their activity, which influences the swarm behaviour. In this p...
Motion control of flexible-link manipulators
KILIÇASLAN, SEMA; Ider, S. K.; Özgören, Mustafa Kemal (2008-12-01)
A new method is proposed for the end-effector trajectory tracking control of flexible robot manipulators. The equations of motion are separated into two parts that represent the pseudostatic equilibrium and the deviations from it, The part of the control input for the pseudostatic equilibrium is determined algebraically, and the other part of the control input for the stabilization of the deviations is obtained by a state variable feedback law, by using strain, joint variable, and end-effector position meas...
