A CLARIFICATORY DEFENSE OF ELIMINATIVE MATERIALISM

Tümkaya, Serdal
This dissertation aims to clarify the true meaning, scope, and target of eliminative materialism (EM). Though its name suggests that the position tells us to empty the content of mind, the real lesson of EM is that folk psychology (FP) is not in charge, and that “we must confront the issue of the descriptive integrity and explanatory efficacy of folk psychology for what it is: an empirical question.” To see how this is so, we must recognize the several formulations of the position and their interrelations. EM, at the ontological level, concerns the idea that it is a priori reasonable to think that the whole FP framework might one day wither away as the relevant sciences proceed. At the methodological level, it aims to free the scientific study of cognition and human behavior from the harmful constraints of FP. Following Paul Smolensky’s remarks in his seminal paper on connectionism, my treatment of the Churchlands’ EM is intended as a formulation of eliminativism that is at once strong enough to form a major philosophy of mind hypothesis, comprehensive enough to face several complex challenges, and sound enough to resist many objections in principle. Only after having achieved that, can we commence to assess the scientific adequacy of eliminativism’s positive proposal.

A Philosophical approach to upper-level ontologies
Satıoğlu, Dilek; Zambak, Aziz Fevzi; Department of Philosophy (2015)
The aim of this thesis is to provide a philosophical approach to upper-level ontologies. The ontologies and/or categorical system of Aristotle, Kant, Husserl, and Quine are evaluated in order to give a philosophical understanding of ontologies. After an explanation of the developments in ontology as a new interdisciplinary study, the most well known upper-level ontologies, BFO, DOLCE, SUMO, and Cyc, are analysed technically. In the light of philosophical ontologies and categorical systems, these upper-level...
A Dynamic Systems Theory of epistemic curiosity
Subasi, Ahmet (Elsevier BV, 2019-08-01)
The article offers a unified theory of epistemic curiosity within dynamic systems framework. It focuses on complex motivational dynamics leading to epistemic curiosity preferences, which are complexly determined by a combination of motivational, affective and cognitive sub-systems operating within an epistemic ecology. Each sub-system is delimited and modelled as an interacting dimension of the multidimensional causality of the system. The theory focuses on personal variations rather than population average...
A critical evaluation of Gricean reductive analysis of meaning
Dinçer, Şule Nur; Grünberg, David; Department of Philosophy (2019)
The aim of this thesis is to examine Paul Grice’s reductive analysis of the concept of non-natural meaning (meaningNN for short). The two stages of Grice’s reductive analysis will be outlined. The utterer’s meaning in the first stage and utterance-type meaning in the latter will be explained. The thesis will state the important objections and amendments in chronological order made by the selected philosopher, as well as – if available – Grice’s own response to the criticisms. We shall critically evaluate th...
The role of human nature in Hume's ethics
Arslanoğlu Çelik, Şengül; İnam, Ahmet; Department of Philosophy (2008)
This dissertation aims to determine the role of human nature in Hume's philosophy. It will examine how moral motivation arises when one takes human nature as the basis of moral philosophyWhat is maintained here is that Hume approaches his rival rationalist philosophers whom he criticised for drawing on metaphysics and rational methods in building the foundation of their ethics. Hume’s “science of man” attempts to isolate the basis of ethics from metaphysical and rational elements. However, this paper demons...
An attempt to make a definition of existence and constructing a foundation for an axiomatic system of ontology
Çağatay, Hasan; Grünberg, Teo; Department of Philosophy (2007)
This thesis aims to make an analysis of the concepts of ‘existence’. It also constructs four new definitions based on the concept of ‘effect’ for different concepts of beings. By reasoning based on these definitions and some pre-suppositions, a foundation for an axiomatic system of ontology is tried to construct.
