O naturalismo em O cortiço de Aluísio Azevedo e Maggie de Stephen Crane

Abstract

Resumo : Um estudo comparativo do naturalismo brasileiro e americano, tendo como material de análise dos romances 0 Cortiço de Aluísio de Azevedo e Maggie; A Girl of the Streets de Stephen Crane, irá esclarecer o curso das duas literaturas. 0 naturalismo, embora esteja presente em ambos os países, toma direções enfáticas diferentes que estão em íntima relação com as divergências culturais e literárias existentes entre o Brasil e os Estados Unidos. A estética naturalista caracteriza-se por uma visão do homem, do mundo, da vida, da sociedade, da religião e da própria literatura que depende dos postulados e idéias da segunda metade do século XIX: cientificismo, darwinismo, determinismo, materialismo e patologismo. 0 Brasil, mais permeável à influência francesa, apresenta um naturalismo caracterizado principalmente pelo patologismo,pelo determinismo hereditário e mesológico, em que o tropicalismo desempenha um papel especial. Os Estados Unidos, onde a influência francesa é mais restrita, apresenta um naturalismo caracterizado pela ausência destes dois itens. 0 naturalismo americano é caracterizado pelo decoro e moderação na escolha e tratamento dos assuntos conseqüente do puritanismo e da influência russa, principalmente Tolstoi. A primeira parte desta dissertação, que se constitui de pesquisa bibliográfica, determina as características básicas do naturalismo europeu, principalmente o de França, onde esta estética teve sua gênese; e estuda a influência européia sobre o naturalismo brasileiro e americano. A segunda parte analisa os dois romances, 0 Cortiço de Aluísio Azevedo e Maggie; A Girl of the Streets de Stephen Crane, tendo em mente as características básicas do naturalismo e sua particular antropovisão e cosmovisão.

Abstract : A comparative study of Brazilian and American naturalism, based on the novels 0 Cortiço by Aluísio Azeredo and Maggie; A Girl of the Streets by Stephen Crane, will clarify the course of the two literatures. Naturalism although it is present in both countries, has a different emphasis in each which is closely connected with the cultural and literary divergences which exist between Brazil and the United States. The aesthetics of naturalism ischaràctèrized by a vision of man, the world, life, society, religiori and literature which is dependent on the postulates and ideas of the second half of the nineteenth century: scientifism Darwinism, determinism, materialism, focusing pathologic phenomena. Brazil, more receptive to the French influence, presents a form of naturalism mainly characterized by pathologism and by hereditary and environmental determinism in which tropicalism plays a special rode. In the naturalism of the United States, where the French influence • is more restricted, these two aspects are absents American naturalism is characterized by moderation and decorum in the choise and treatment of subjects, as a consequence of puritanism. and the influence of the Russian realists, specially Tolstoy. The first part of this dissertation, which consists of bibliographic research, establishes the basic characteristics of European naturalism, principally that of France, where this •aesthetics originated. The European influence on Brazilian and American naturalism ia then examined. The second part analyses the two novels, 0 Cortiço by Aluísio Azevedo and Maggie; A Girl of the Streets by Stephen Crane, from the point of view of the basic characteristics of naturalism and its particular vision of man and the universe.
