[en] Emotions regulation has been identified as a precipitant of sexual offending (Hanson et al., 2007; Ward & Beech, 2016). In contrast to cognitive processing (e.g. cognitive distortion), few therapeutic programs have considered emotions regulation (except empathy) as a clinical target due to lack of operationalization (Gannon & Ward, 2017). Nevertheless, recent theoretical frameworks such as Safe Offender Strategies (SOS) or Self-Regulation Model-Revised (SMR-R) aim to address this issue (Fortune & Ward, 2016; Stinson & Becker, 2013). Empirical findings suggest the incremental value of therapeutic programs focused on emotions regulation among sexual offenders (Stinson et al., 2015). Similarly, biofeedback technics such as mindfulness can be helpful for this purpose (Gillespie et al., 2012). This literature review outlines the interests and issues of emotions regulation in therapeutic programs for sexual offenders.
