Uloga pozitivnih uverenja o ruminiranju u depresivnim i ruminativnim reakcijama
The role of positive beliefs about rumination in depressive and ruminative reactions
Introduction: Rumination, as a repetitive negative thinking, has attracted a considerable theoretic and empirical interest and was, consequently, included into several theoretical explanations of depression within the cognitive-behavioral approach. Previous research, as well, pointed out important relationships between metacognition, rumination and depression. Objective: To conduct the first Serbian study of relationships between positive beliefs about rumination and negative life events (independent variables) and depressive and ruminative reactions (dependent variables). We hypothesized that: 1. ruminative and depressive reactions are positively correlated, 2. positive beliefs about rumination affect positively rumination, 3. positive beliefs about rumination affect positively depressive reactions when negative life events occur. Method: A prospective study of a sample of students (N=123, average age=20,7 years) who were given four questionnaires in two time points, ten weeks apart. ...The sample comprised the participants who, by the time of the first testing, had different levels of positive beliefs about rumination but an equally low level of depressive and ruminative reactions (whereby we eliminated the influence of these reactions on the results of the second testing). Results: There is a high positive correlation between depressive and ruminative reactions by the time of the second testing, also and a statistically significant correlation of positive beliefs about rumination on ruminative reactions, when the number of negative life events occurring in the ten-week period was controlled for. In this investigation a statistically significant interaction was confirmed between positive beliefs about rumination and negative life events on depressive reactions. Conclusion: All our hypotheses were confirmed, and the results were discussed in the perspective of recent insights within the cognitive- behavioral approach, with a special emphasis on the Self-Regulatory Executive Function (S-REF) model.
