The paper discusses settlement of legionary veterans on the limes of Pannonia Inferior, in the vici of forts downstream from the Danube bend. The majority of former soldiers belongs to the group of men who had stayed where they had served. Their inscriptions imply the presence of the detachments of the legion II Adiutrix in the fortresses of Ulcisia Castra, Intercisa, Bölcske and Ad Statuas. Veterans settled on the limes of Pannonia Inferior lived in well-organized communities and some of them were artisans and members of artisan collegia. Epigraphic evidence provides data on their marital status and families. It suggests that former soldiers preferred Roman citizens to peregrine women as their spouses. Judging by their names, all the veterans’ wives were Roman citizens with the exception of Mira, married Marcus Attius Rufus, who lived in the vicus of Ulcisia Castra. She belonged to the native population of Pannonia Inferior. Claudia Monimosa, married to Aelius Ingenuilis, belonged ...to the Syrian community in Intercisa.
